The SCMA Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course is offered annually, roughly on alternate weekends and covers the following areas of instruction: knots rope handling for belays, signals, and climber communication, leader belaying, fallen-climber tie-off, rappelling overhanging rappels and prusiking, multi-pitch climbing simulation and general protection placement and anchor construction.

Clay Patton has guided extensively throughout the United States, South America and Asia. He has been guiding for 18 years and has instructed and guided for American Alpine Institute, Colorado and North Carolina Outward Bound schools previous to founding Southwest Adventures in 1989. Certified Level One Rock Climbing Guide. He has pioneered over three hundred first ascents at Joshua Tree, Idyllwild, and Yosemite. A former member of Yosemite's search and rescue team, Bob is a veteran of Yosemite's big walls.
